GAVI Alliance Announces Support for HPV Vaccination in Developing Countries

February 4, 2013:

On World Cancer Day, the GAVI Alliance announced its support for HPV vaccination programs in 8 developing countries: Ghana, Kenya, Lao PDR, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania. This comes as welcome news in the countries where cervical cancer is the greatest cause of death among women and where the current cost of the HPV vaccine is unaffordable. GAVI predicts over 30 million girls will be immunized by 2020 and has already negotiated the price of the vaccine with one manufacturer to $5 per dose.
